Cardiac Surgery: the heart of the matter

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Australia and New Zealand, accounting for 34% and 40% of all deaths per ann2.

Cardiovascular disease kills one Australian every 11 minutes and one New Zealander every 90 minutes2.

Obesity and smoking are risk factors for a number of diseases including coronary heart disease2. Despite improvements in recent years it still remains one of the biggest burdens on the economy2.

Cardiac Surgery is surgery on the heart and/or great vessels to treat the complications of ischemic heart disease, correct congenital deformities or to treat valvular disease1.

Minimally Invasive surgical techniques are common place in a number of specialities (eg: General and Gynaecology surgery) today. Minimally Invasive techniques are also being offered in Cardiac Surgery to expand treatment options, and reduce the risk to the patient undergoing Cardiac Surgery. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery is defined as Cardiac Surgery without the use of the heart lung machine, or without the use of the large breast bone incision (called a sternotomy)3.
